Quite..erm..pinteresting?

Whilst I was away from Bloggyland recently, my most ‘successful’ personal creation hit 1000+ pins on Pinterest. I have already posted about this before when it hit 500+ pins and I was cock-a-hoop pretty pleased, and this post is not just another excuse to do that, although I see no reason to be falsely coy or say ‘oh, that old thing?’ Now though, they stop counting, and it just has 1k pins beside it, so, fickle to the end, I have rather lost interest! Maybe, if it ever gets to 2k, I might get excited again. I might also be in a residential home eating pureed vegetables and telling inappropriate jokes, who knows?

This post is more about what does, or does not, get re-pinned. Again, I did mention this previously: I am fully aware that the card is not a work of genius, and it has been made with a very popular and relatively new range of stamps which undoubtedly helped. It is nice, I think, but I am not deluded. It is not ‘amazing’. It is though, perhaps, something which, as a beginner with an interest in card making, you could look at and think ‘yes, I can do that with no problem’. And to be honest I think this of most of the cards I make. I know I generally ‘execute well’, and my work is neat and well finished, but not exceptional. I am ok with that (no choice really!).

But what interests me is: how do we make our pinning choices? Why do we re-pin? Because something is achievable, or aspirational, or just because we may as well save it ‘because we can‘? I have boards and pins for hundreds of things I am pretty sure I may never make, or buy, or visit…. I pin cards that I could never hope to produce the like of if I lived to be 150. Is that just me?

I have a few cards now that have a few hundred pins, but it has taken a long time. I’m sure for other people this happens way, way quicker. For me, I thought to use it as a gauge of what people may or may not like. But here is where I am stuck, and going back to the “what appeals“ question. It seemed to me that Pinterest would be a good way to check this.

Here is my example of the dilemma. Months ago I pinned two cards on the same day, which were, broadly, the same card but upside down and downside up. One has had WAY more pins than the other: 427 vs 110. So is one visually much more pleasing?  If so, is it obvious to everyone except me, and is there a reason? Feel free to say (nicely!) – I’d like to know! I made them so I cannot tell for sure; I do have a slight preference, but it is only slight.

Or, is it just luck? Of all the pins in all the world, someone comes across one of yours, but only one…

I am thinking about doing an experiment. Two cards, in the ‘same but different’ category, probably pretty much the same layout as these. Then I will pin them and wait (for months, I know) to see if none, one or both get re-pinned. I would have made them to include in this post but any creativity I had is hiding behind the sofa this week and refusing to come out.

If anyone else fancies trying the same experiment, let me know and I’ll re-pin yours. Oh, and to be fully scientific (because I have been rigorous so far, right??!) there should probably be a ‘control’ as well, so something entirely different but pinned on the same day. Pehaps even make it a howler, just to see!

If you should choose to accept the mission, good luck, and get sticking! This post will NOT self destruct in 5 seconds…

  1. It is nice to have you back blogging. Congratulations on the 1,000 pins! It is an interesting question, one thing I have noticed, is lighting and colors can make a big difference on how many pins something gets. I find my best lit photos using bolder colors tend to get more looks or pins. It goes with the old marketing research of super markets, yellow and orange labeled things are predominately attract more buyers. If I was in a more creative place I probably would join your challenge but I am interested in following it so please link when you post it.

    1. I’ll try! Interesting about the labels, I don’t like yellow or orange much so probably avoid them. I think you are right about the lighting though, and probably the strong colours too. Pale is not always interesting!

  2. If I really had to pick a favourite out of these 2 cards – it would be hard – but I think it would be the one on the left. Was that the one with the most pins?! Regarding what I pin, it’s basically just what I like! Although, if I’m thinking of buying a new stamp set, or die or if I have just bought something new, I will purposely look for cards and projects made with this item – basically to give me some ideas and to see how people have used them!

    1. I didn’t mean to make everyone guess, but now I need to see what comments say, so I’ll tell later. I do the same – if I am thinking of buying, or have made a purchase, I like to see what other people have done. That is the beauty of Pinterest after all! BTW – I bought the knitting book you recommended – thanks so much, I love it!

  3. They’re both really pretty, love the colours and roses, but the one with the flowers at the top has more to look at…did I get it right? Do I win a prize…never actually been on Pinterest, but congratulations on your success : )x

    1. Thanks! I’m not telling today, just because people are guessing and I do love a game! Plus I may have some super-tricky maths to do, pie charts, swingometer etc to deliver the survey results. I have David Dimbleby on standby…

  4. Your cards are always beautiful so there is no doubt why pinners want to repin them.
I have noticed that if you get a card or any other pin highlighted ie., one that gets shown automatically to other pinners with the same interests (however that works) or ones that appear on the front page, when pinners choose there options of pin boards, the repinning goes through the roof. That then gets multiplied by the more repins and it snow balls. I am really interested to see what happens in your experiment. Oh, about 6 months ago they started sort of adding all of the repins together. Did you notice that?
I do think your cards stand out and are really appealing. You have a wonderful style.
On a slightly different tack, a funny thing happened to me on pinterest a couple of years ago. Over one Christmas my pin board following went up by 500 followers every 10 minutes. No joke. There was nothing special pinned or anything. I ended up with 96K followers! This figure however, doesn’t equate to the number of pins on my boards being repinned. I have about 95K pins and get about 30 repins a day? I think this happened to a lot of people. It did put me off pinning a little.
    Keep us updated,
    Flo x
    Sorry this is long.

    1. Thanks Flo! You have made my day with your kind comments. I did notice the re-pins adding up, but I think it varies depending on which platform/device you are using. On my tablet my 1k pin card shows as being pinned 42 times! Your Christmas mega-pinning experience is funny. Maybe Santa knew you had been really good that year?!

  5. Hello P.Puff
I know EXACTLY what you mean regarding the interest in one pin over another. I’ve made two things which are lovely. Personally I think the 2nd thing I made (in the same ‘genre’ was the better of the two. However, the lovely people of pinterest have decided that they like the first thing better and I will sometimes get a gazillion people visiting my blog just to look at that particular thing and learn how I made it.

I don’t mind .. but I wish I could stand there and say … ok.. now go and see the other one because that one’s better. So much better that I have it stood on my desk here, to my right, as I’m typing this. I cannot part with it because it’s just so lovely!

I think some of the ‘problem’ is that I’m totally rubbish at taking photos. Now and again I’ll get a good picture – but … I’m under no delusion that I’m photographer.

With regard to your cards … I actually like the card with the roses towards the top of the card. They ‘feel’ more natural there for some reason, and I also love love love the polka dots embossing. (But I do have a bit of a soft spot for polka dots so maybe I’m not a good person to ask).

If sent the cards for my birthday … I’d put them both in a place where they could be seen and show off what talented, fabulous friends I had.

    1. I’d like to see your pins that you mention. Can you make that happen? A gazillion visitors must be lovely, even if you feel a bit like a stately home, open to the public and admired for possibly all the wrong reasons!

      1. [actually laughing out loud].. noooooo, I didn’t ACTUALLY mean a gazillion … it was just a way of saying a lot of people looked at one particular pin and came to my blog to look at how I’d done something, but only a fraction of people came to see the other thing – and yet I felt that the other thing was more lovely.

I don’t think there’s an exact science on it. I think it’s more a case of what catches folks attention. ‘Somethings’ are just one of those things which catches the attention. Feel blessed that youare drawing a crowd, you talented thing!

      2. Thanks Cobs! Sorry for delay to reply – I have been at the coast. I have plenty of ‘zero’ or just a couple of repins, and sometimes I do think ‘but I really liked that one’. Who knows. How about we all do a post on our favourite creation that we feel has been missed, and then we all re-pin each others?!

  6. Well down for getting so many re pins! I like the one with the roses at the bottom, probably because that’s what I’d do. I’ve just searched Pinterest for an idea and there wasn’t anything in that bracket even after using different search terms, no idea why. I look for and pin ideas for a theme or event, or for a new craft set to get ideas. I only re pin things which I think I could reproduce or which inspire me. I will take part in your challenge when I’ve made something. (I’m rubbish with cards at the minute as I’ve focused so much on crochet.) Here’s hoping your creativity skulks back out from behind that sofa very soon.

    1. Ooh another participant would be great fun! No pressure, whenever you are up for it. The way I am feeling now mine might be ready about November-ish. You clearly have pinning discipline, which I need to adopt, and soon!

      1. I made a card tonight but it was rubbish so highly unlikely to make it to my Pinterest. However I have plans to do more so fingers crossed one or two will be worthy of being photographed! 😊

      2. S’okay. You are not alone. What I have produced this week would get a kindly ‘ah, well, she tried hard’ in an end of term show for 10 year olds… It happens…

  7. My guess is that the card on the left received the most pins. It has more embossed area which gives it slightly more visual interest. Once it is pinned by a few extra people, that item is then viewed by a greater audience, and that results in more pins.

I am also curious as to what will make a pin suddenly surge. I created a page 4 years ago. It got roughly 200 pins. Suddenly in the last year, 600 more people have pinned it. Why would a really old pin make its way back into circulation?

Btw, great minds must think alike. I just wrote a post about pins! It won’t come out for another week or so.

    1. I unintentionally made it a guessing game, so now I have to wait and tell later! Maybe with yours it was something which became current again – you know what I mean? We loved vellum, then we were bored with it, then you couldn’t even buy it, now it is all over the place again. Or maybe just some people with lots of followers pinned it, and so it got new, well deserved attention? 200 pins is still aspirational for me!

  8. Funny you should post this, as I have thought much the same myself. What makes people pin? I have one creation that every now and again, people seem to resurrect and re-pin, but no where near as many as you! Sometimes I think it depends on the colour phase or type of design that is popular at the time, and if you fit in, then hey-ho you cracked it! After all we are just mere crafting mortals, with on/off switches! x

    1. So glad it is not just me! And yes, there is definitely a zeitgeist element. When pinning I often visit the site it came from if I like what I see, and sometimes it is years old, but it is still lovely and still made me want to pin it!

  9. Congratulations on 1000 pins!
I like the left one of these two cards more. Maybe because it has less clear space… and delicate dots instead…
I have a couple of suggestions at this point:
    1. Once I was reading about web design and there was an info, that people tend to look at the top left corner first… and if there is nothing to catch their attention, people just don’t focus on this page. Probably this can be working with cards also.
    2. Second suggestion is that people tend to like more familiar things (designs, layouts, etc) and patterns, that are easy to ‘read’. Dotted embossing is more easy to read, than floral here and layouts with a focal point in the top part are also more common. Maybe this also works…

    1. Thank you. Reading your comments, it makes complete sense and is such useful information, but I would never have worked it out for myself. It is so nice of you to share it – you are a superstar. Thanks!

  10. Using my own “browsing” experience of Pinterest, I tend to re-pin things that 1) look easy enough that I could probably copy it; 2) something that catches my eye quickly, or 3) something that I find absolutely stunning and “hope” someday to be able to duplicate in some fashion. I know a lot of times, I will be looking for something in particular, and find myself pinning other things I come across because they catch my eye. Sometimes it is the card itself, and sometimes it is because it is so different that anything I had seen. If something unusual was used, I will usually re-pin it. I found a pin using washi tape to create a cake. I am amazed at how many times that pin has been re-pinned. It is a really simple card, but seems to have the most re-pins. You just never know. I also think that it is when something is posted. The time of day seems to have a lot to do with it. I have posted two things on Pinterest back to back and when I go to Pinterest, I only find one of them. Depending on how many followers you have and how many you are following seems to have something to do with it. If you and your followers are all pinning something at the same time, things seem to be “jumbled” and your pin may be lost down the page. How many people scroll, and scroll, and scroll. I know that I can look at Pinterest and glance through some things and tell myself that I want to go back and look at that one again, but then can’t find it, no matter how far I scroll down. I think it could be the time of day, and the number of people that I follow that are posting. Just my thoughts. 🙂

    1. Huge apologies for not replying sooner but I have been away from home. Seems like we have really similar pinning habits! I also know what you mean about things getting jumbled up – I pinned two (admittedly very similar) shots of a card, but with different comments when I first started out, and Pinterest seems to be treating them as a single pin, although it shows on my board as two, with exactly the same number of re-pins. I also have another card which I know was re-pinned a bit, and now it just shows as a static 3 and never goes higher! I don’t mean to grumble, I love Pinterest and think it is a brilliant free ideas resource, but sometimes it feels a bit confusing!

I’m up for the Challenge and will work on something (more than likely in about 10 minutes when it gets the better of me) and see how it goes. Would be interesting to compare notes.

And a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on the 1K Pins!!! Woo Hoo!!!

  12. Congratulations from me too. First time on your blog. Love the way you write. I like the LHS rose at the top and I pin a) Images of stamps I have (Although rarely copy) Stifles the creativity and doesn’t do my brain cells any good.) b) What interests me at the moment ie, fairy gardens – grandchildren c) The latest images from current Stampin’ Up! catalogues. e)Blogs I follow or pins from pinners following me (when I find time to look)
I have one card from another pinner keeps getting repinned. I did the exact card 3 times in different colours to see if I could get some pins. Sich, zero, nil, nothing. Tell me the secret please.

    1. Sorry for the delay in replying – I was away from home. Thanks for your kind words. You preferred the most successful card, as I think did most people who expressed a preference, so I guess the stats are representative. Maybe, with your experiment, given that you don’t ‘copy’, perhaps your followers didn’t see it as in your style, or maybe those that would like it had already pinned it?!
