I have had a couple of run-ins with coincidence recently. This is just one of them: for about three weeks I had been planning to start another ‘series’ of occasional blogs, titled with what I thought was a pretty old-fashioned couple of words. Then one of my favourite bloggers used those very same words in one of her posts this week, on the same day I was planning to do mine, so I postponed. Now, I am sure she won’t mind when I go ahead with the series, and you know, none of us have a monopoly on the English language, but it just made me go ’hmmmn, what are the odds of that phrase coming up right now…?
Here’s the next coincidence. A fellow blogger Flo, commenting on my post on Thursday asked if walnut whips were still available. A random thought that had popped into her head and she didn’t know why. Funnily enough I had seen some just last Saturday (in italics to show it is important), so I could say ‘yes‘. It was odd that I had noticed them because I can’t remember the last time I did. It would have been years upon years ago. I don’t like them AT ALL, never have: they always made me pull the ‘bleah’ face, so I probably actually avoid them. But my sister does like them, and, equally, always has, so I thought of her immediately that day. Another blogger Samantha, reading the comment from Flo, mentioned that she had 3 walnut whips in her fridge… Hmmmn, I don’t know if walnut whips are rare or not, but bear with me here because I was beginning to spot a theme. Never say I am slow to catch on.
My sister (lifetime walnut whip lover) and her partner Painter live at the coast, 60+ miles away from London, and from me. Whilst out shopping last Saturday in their seaside town Painter and my sister bumped into an old neighbour of Painter’s from his North London days, someone he hasn’t seen for over 20 years. Sarah (I am not using real names because I can’t ask these people if it is ok) was just visiting the coast for the weekend with her boyfriend Pete. Amazing, huh? Over 60 miles, over 20 years, randomly meeting a great distance from where they previously knew each other.
Anyway, Painter and my sister arranged for Sarah and Pete to come around that evening. Sarah and Pete duly turned up with another old neighbour, Robert, that Painter and Sarah had both known from the same time in London, who was also just in town for the weekend and who Sarah had also just bumped into in the street. Double amazing. But I am not finished yet.
That evening, in conversation with Sarah’s partner Pete, it turned out he has a house in the road next to mine in South London! I have no idea what the odds of this strange convoluted chain are, but I believe the chances of a jackpot winning lottery ticket might be better. And they are not good odds, in case you didn’t know!
Now we need a little context, for those who may come from small communities or not know much about the UK population density. I know some people visit their nearest town miles away and see many acquaintances, family or friends. But London has a population of over 8.7 million people. The odds of bumping into someone you know a few miles away from your usual haunts is pretty high, never mind it happening over 60 miles away. For those people to then meet someone else the same day from the same old neighbourhood, and for their partner to live in a whole different area of London, but in a road adjacent to another family member is, well, astronomical basically.
I’m sure there must be a reason for this. We have random people, in a random town, historically connected to each other, and brought together on the same day. We have family geographically elsewhere (me), also linked by coincidence, also on the same day. And then I am reminded of the event later in the week by another two random connections.
It has to be important. The stars are aligned. There must be a message, a meaning to this. I have given it much careful thought and have come to a conclusion.
Maybe the universe is telling me to try a walnut whip again, just in case?
Has anyone else been experiencing odd or amazing coincidences recently?
Yes, indeed, I have! I don’t claim to be psychic by any means, but I do have a “talent”, and it happens mainly at work. (I’m an archery coach at an archery/fencing facility.) I’ll start thinking about a random person, either a student or one of our “regulars”, who hasn’t been around for some time. I wonder what has happened to them, how they’re doing, and whether they’ll be back. Sure enough – without fail (my co-workers can vouch for this) – that person shows up, usually on that or the very next day! There are no triggers as to why I would think about that particular person, and some of them haven’t been to our place for a couple of years. They just “hear the call” and come! There are other serendipitous coincidences (unrelated to this phenomenon) that have been happening to me, too, just like you describe. Spooky!

Sorry, I thought about explaining it in the post, then forgot! It is a cone of milk chocolate, filled with fondant or mallow, topped off with a walnut. I hate fondant and mallow!

Thanks for explaining what a Walnut Whip was, the images were getting little nuts in my mind trying to figure it out. I am with you on your dislike of fondant. It makes cakes look pretty but not tasty. I always feel shortchanged on my frosting fix when a cake is covered in it.

I haven’t noticed any coincidences recently for myself but generally there are a few regarding myself, hubby and neighbours (not the tv programme!) You see, my Mum and Dad’s neighbours are called Karen and Dave – like me and my Dave. Their other neighbour shares the same birthday as my Mum AND Dad – 13th May and her daughter shares the same birthday as mine! Spooky!

OK, Gillian, I have to admit, I had to Google “walnut whip”! I have never seen them here in the US (or in Germany in the mid 1990’s). You have had a week full of coincidences. I’m not sure if my Tuesday/Wednesday activities would count as coincidences or serendipity, and the culmination of WHATEVER it was had me home to answer a “I’m not sure if I need to go to the hospital” call from my mother. And I am still shaking my head that the tumblers fell into place the way they did. [I made my mother go to the hospital in an ambulance (heart related – I couldn’t help her if anything happened & I was driving her! I followed behind in my vehicle.), she was diagnosed with something her cardiologist suspected, given new meds and released by 4:00pm.]

Oh my word, that is one of those situations where you are so relieved it happened the way it did, especially if it was a change of plans that made it be ok. Glad your mum is fine, and that you had the presence of mind to use the ambulance service too! And you aren’t missing anything with walnut whips, trust me!

YES, so happy that my plans had changed & I was home. She knows my cell phone number, but I am not sure if she would call it knowing I was not home (“I don’t want to bother you”).
I just read a review/explanation of a Walnut Whip, and it compares it to our Mallomars (no walnut pretense). I don’t care for those, so I would probably be with you on the Walnut Whip! Really, I am a simple chocolate person…how about a Cadbury Dairy Milk bar??

There are some things I do NOT want a lifetime supply of, and a walnut whip is definitely one. Basically it is a waste of half a walnut and some perfectly good chocolate. Did you find Narnia at all?

No…I think that’s where I’ve been going wrong. The sort of wardrobe I need would be bought from a little old antiques shop, tucked away down a back street. It has the sort of old fashioned door with a bell above it that rings as you push it open. You would be greeted by an elderly gentleman who peers at you benignly over the top of his gold-rimmed spectacles, and enquires: “And how may I help you today…”

Coincidence is a very funny thing. It’s an old one but Mr Craft knew my friends as they went to air cadets. I knew nothing of his existence until we began working at Asda together and we learned we had mutual friends.
A few weeks ago a new lady joined our Slimming World group. She added me as a friend on Facebook and I discovered she knew my dad. She was in fact a distant relative whose grandparents lived next to mine for 50 years, and we both now live 30 miles away from there but in the same village as each other. I do like happy coincidences but not walnut whips!

You said: “Has anyone else been experiencing odd or amazing coincidences recently?”
Yes … but I think I believe that they aren’t coincidences, but more a design. A plan, if you like. Maybe call it ‘fate’.
We don’t meet people by coincidence … they were meant to cross our path for a reason.
Deepak Chopra said: “Life is totally interconnected. These unusual ‘things’ are connections which surprise you simply because you aren’t used to seeing life except in fragments. Now, it’s beginning to piece itself together.”
Look at it (or ‘them’) from that angle, and let idea sink in for a while. You’ll soon begin to see the bigger picture.
On a slightly different note – but still interconnected … you don’t like Walnut Whips ….. you are not my sister!

Well I don’t like marshmallow in any form; I also don’t like Crème Eggs. I think you get Crème Eggs over there, but if not, they are a milk chocolate shell with a very sweet , quite liquid fondant filling. the insides of a Walnut Whip are somewhere between the two, as I recall. To be honest I wouldn’t care if I never ate another walnut either! Definitely not my thing, but they used to be very popular.

They used to be incredible little pieces of workmanship. The chocolate was piped into a sort of cone shape, then filled with cloud soft yumminess and sealed on the bottom with a chocolate base.
However … they’re sadly now no longer piped, but a mould is used which is meant to make the Walnut Whip look like it’s been piped. It doesn’t.
But they’re still lovely to eat. 🙂

Fab post. Really enjoyed reading it. Definitely a sign you should eat more walnut whips! lol! Seriously, It is funny how things happen and the people you meet along the way. This isn’t recent but after we bought this house (here in a very remote mountain village in Spain) a year or so later an English couple, from Leeds UK, moved into the village. Now I am originally from Shropshire. We took them out one morning for hot chocolate and doughnuts. While we were chatting the woman asked me where I was from in Shropshire. I told her my home town. She said “oh, that’s funny because one of my oldest friends moved there a few years ago. You probably wont know her but her name is Helen and her husband is a pig farmer”. I turned to her and said “her husband’s name isn’t Martin and they have two children x and y”. She said “yes, that’s them”. My reply was, (completely true) “they were my next door neighbours”!!! The other funny thing which is a strange coincidence about where we live. Before we bought the house we lived on a sail boat. We spent 9 months in a little Spanish marina. We were moored next to a German guy. We only ever said hello or good morning and that was it. In the Spring we both left the Marina for the sailing season. We returned to the marina for the winter and then bought the house. Didn’t really think of this man again. 3 years after we bought the house a man came knocking on the door. I opened it and it was the same man. I said hello Dieta. He looked at me quite strange and then clicked where he remembered me from. It turns out that he was the original owner of the house some 20 years earlier. He was just visiting the area and wanted to have a look. Gosh, sorry this is really really long. The thing is, I think, like Cobs, that people we meet in life are meant to cross our path. Not sure why but just a connection maybe. Very spookylicious if you ask me!!!

Great stories – I think these are called synchronicities and the funny thing is, if you start noticing them, they will start happening even more regularly! You could write them down in a journal, like dreams, and maybe an important insight will emerge, who knows? About the Cadbury Creme eggs, yes, we only get them at Easter, and I agree, yuck, too sweet! But the other ones, the little solid chocolate mini eggs with the hard shell – those are to die for and you have to get them before Easter, because afterwards – gone! There are never any left over like half price Halloween candy on the clearance rack.

Funnily enough I like the solid ones with a shell coating too. Oh, I want chocolate now. I think I might have to keep a diary of these events because they just keep happening at the moment, or maybe my awareness is raised!

That is a bit mad! I had a similar incident when I was younger. We had 2 neighbours move in to the house next to ours. We got along with the 2 ladies that lived there but never really recognised them or realised a connection. Then about a year later, we were all sat on our front doorsteps to watch the town carnival come by, and we noticed the next door neighbours had a guest, their sister, who only turned out to be my mums best friend from her teens who she hadn’t seen for around 20 years. One of the neighbours turned out to be her younger sister – who’s bed my mum had vomited all over after her 18th birthday celebrations back in 1989! Small world!

I, too had to Google Walnut Whips. The do remind me of Mallow Cups. They are not my favorite, but I can tolerate them. I have had a lot of coincidences in my life. When I was younger (a lot!) I worked for an insurance company. An agent came in one day and offered me a job at his agency. I decided to take the job as it was a smaller office. I found out that my boss went to the same high school that I did (there were 7 in my town at that time), our birthdays are two weeks apart (and 5 years), and we got married to our spouses the same year, two weeks apart. Weird. And yes, I’m still there…37 years and counting. A few years ago, we took our annual trip to the Gulf coast for a week. This is a 14 hour drive from our home. We were there for a week. On the drive home, we decided to stop for the night in the southern part of our State. We checked into a hotel and asked about good restaurants in the area. We were directed to a nearby restaurant and when we walked in, we ran into one of my sister’s brother-in-laws and his wife. They were just returning from the Gulf coast, and had stayed in the condo building right next to us! We didn’t see them the entire week we were down there, but on our way home, we ran into them in a restaurant in a smaller town in the southern part of our State. Weird! We still laugh about it. Neither of us knew the other ones were down there. These are just a couple that I can think of. I think coincidences happen all of the time. Oh, and thumbprints are YUMMY! We have a bakery close to my office and go over there and get them several times throughout the year. Love them! They are kind of like snowballs….without the filling. 🙂

All of these stories of meeting people unexpectedly in far away places just reminded me of one that I experienced long ago – I was living on the East Coast of the USA and my mother had always wanted to travel to England, so after I graduated from college, we decided to go on her dream trip together. While visiting Harrod’s in London, we were going into the ladies’ restroom and coming out was a classmate of mine from my college back in the USA – and we both kind of did a double-take passing each other like that, on the way in and out of the bathroom! We weren’t really friends so we didn’t stop and talk. But it was a small college so we knew each other by name. A few years later it got stranger; by that time I had gotten married, and my husband started working at a very small bookbindery with only about 5 employees. One of them was that girl! So my husband asked her, “Do you remember when you and my wife saw each other in the bathroom at Harrod’s?” And yes – yes, she did 🙂

I know, right? Although that leads to another story… one time I was walking on the beach underneath the Golden Gate bridge and came to a line of port-a-potties. One of the doors swung open just as I passed by and the actor Robin Williams stepped out. In that split second you have to make a decision – do you corner him and attempt to initiate a conversation, or do you give the poor guy his dignity and avert your eyes since he’s just stepping out of the toilet? I chose the latter. (Hmm, the bathroom again; I’m seeing a trend here…)

Well, now I believe wholeheartedly in this synchronicity/coincidence thing!
I’d never, ever heard of Walnut Whips until Puff enlightened me a few days ago, and, even after reading the many comments on the subject, I still had a hard time envisioning such a strange-sounding confection. Here’s where things get all Twilight Zone:
Yesterday, I spent a lovely morning in the village of Oakville, a charming town on the outskirts of my native Toronto. Now, keep in mind that I hadn’t shopped in this part of Oakville for many years. I happily strolled around for several hours, spending a good part of that time in an incense-laden New Age spiritual Wicca Buddhist magick crystal shop (I felt like I was in seventh heaven). After I’d browsed in a few other stores along the main street, I was ready to head home. But on my way back to the car, I spotted a shop with a large Union Jack sign over the door — a British grocer, selling all manner of imported goodies from England and Scotland. How serendipitous, as my rumbling tummy, which hadn’t been fed for hours, reminded me! Naturally, I had to check this place out!
As I tried to choose a treat from amongst the dizzying array of Cadbury’s, Robertson’s and Twinings plus a host of products and flavours we simply never see here in Canada, I heard the staff (all Brits) explain to other customers that the shop had opened a mere seven weeks before. “Awesome,” I said to myself as I looked around for the Irn-Bru (introduced to me years ago by a Scottish friend). Then it hit me (it took a while). Forget the fizzy orange stuff! There was only one product in that store that I simply had to have!
I asked one of the clerks, a strapping Yorkshire fellow, for his help. “Aye, lass (tee hee, he called me lass!), we’ve got loads! Just came in yesterday!” And he proceeded to show me to the sweets aisle where sat, bold as brass, packet upon packet of — you guessed it —
Walnut Whips!
P.S. The box of 6 individually-wrapped Whips cost me an outrageous $9.99 CAD, but I just couldn’t leave the store without them. I’ve already eaten two of the fluffy fondant fancies. And I like them. I really do like them a lot.
