The Jaws Legacy

I refer to the famous and fabulous movie, Jaws, of course. I saw it at the cinema, when I was rather younger than the age group the film censor board had set, but you know how it is. I was with my sister who had seen it before and promised to warn me of the bits where I ‘shouldn’t look’, seeing as I was, and still am, very squeamish. She did her job just fine, but even so, well, let’s just say it affected me. I already had a recurring dream about crocodiles to deal with, now I had lurid visuals of shark attacks and that menacing music to throw in too. I absolutely kid you not, but a few weeks after seeing the movie I was standing at the kitchen sink and out of the corner of my eye, just for a split second, I thought I saw a shark on the kitchen floor….and I actually jumped…. Imagination is sometimes a scary thing!

Of course I have rewatched the movie many times since then, and seen all the sequels too ( the fourth was hilarious), but there are still bits where I have to look away.

I realised whilst watching TV the other day, there was what should have been an idyllic scenario. A beautiful day: azure sky, sapphire sea, and a small boat bobbing up and down. A handsome couple are aboard, chatting lazily about something inconsequential. And whilst doing so, the chap dangles his left foot into the water. Instantly, inner alarm bells sound. I think ’NOOOO! STOP! What are you THINKING?!’ I can’t help it. Instinctively I imagine he, and everyone else that languidly dips a limb into the ocean, is being a stark raving idiot. Don’t they KNOW what might be down there, waiting? Don’t they want to keep all their limbs intact? Or have they maybe worked out which is their least favourite, the arm or leg they don’t mind sacrificing, just to cool down a bit?

Don’t get me wrong – I am aware this is a totally insane reaction on my part. I know we are far more danger to sharks than they are to us, and that instances of attack are rare. I admire the stark beauty and efficiency of sharks. But, deep down, Jaws planted that fear, that terrible possibility… I mean, if I thought I was in danger whilst peeling spuds in the kitchen, clearly we are not dealing with rationality here. And that, I have come to conclude, is the Jaws Legacy. Maybe I can try suing for damages?

So here we have a card, with a flamingo staying safely on dry land. He’s not daft. Or maybe he has seen the movie too?

  1. “Pretty In Pink” another classic ’80’s film…yep, I am also a determined non-swimmer due to the possible presence of giant sharks and maybe even squid..love the card though. I do like flamingoes…

    1. Thanks! I love a flamingo too. On reflection I expect sharks would think of a flamingo leg as more of a toothpick than a drumstick. Actually I am not sure they like salt water either. Think I need to brush up on my natural history a bit!

      1. There’s a thought…a whole generation that won’t go in…I am reasonably sure you get salt and freshwater sharks. There was a programme about some in a pond on a golf course..

      2. Class action, maybe? For all of us that have been robbed of the opportunity to swim in sewage-riddled seas. And yes, some sharks are in freshwater rivers. It was the flamingo’s water preference I was unsure about. Flat or fizzy…Perrier or Evian… I have to look up the golf course story!

      3. Ha ha…no idea about flamingoes and would they like lemon or lime…
As much as I love being by the sea, I will still only paddle to ankle depth..

      4. In Britain, ankles only, because the water is cold. In warmer seas I am a bit more reckless! I never lose touch with the floor though, and the water has to be crystal clear…

  2. Gorgeous card. Really love it. Fab photo. Just think if there was ever a law suit, bearing in mind it was the film that kept a generation out of the water!! I love swimming in the ocean but he is there in the back of my mind der de, der de……………. he he.

  3. I have seen all the Jaws movies, but I guess they did not upset me – I do not see sharks in the kitchen floor. LOL I hope making this beautiful card has calmed your nerves. 🙂

  4. A really great card, in color choice, layout and subject matter! You must be the younger sister; I’m the oldest, and when my sis was in 8th grade she had to read articles in Time magazine for her social studies class. My job was to screen the magazine first for gruesome or disturbing photos and cover them up with white paper and tape (before Post-It notes were invented!) So nice that your sister was there during your first viewing of “Jaws” to warn you when to close your eyes! Now, my dad was the little brother to his big sister, and when they went to see “The Wizard of Oz” in the theater, circa 1939, all was fine at first, until the wicked witch appeared. The 7-year-old got up out of his seat and said, “This is where we came in!” His sister said, “Shut up, Eldred!” and I suppose he was left on his own to figure out when to close his eyes!

    1. Did your dad end up with a fear of green women?! Actually the flying monkeys are pretty chilling too. How funny that you were enrolled to censor magazines for your sister. Mine used to tell me rude jokes, and give me her more mature literature to read! She would have flunked your job, I think!!

  5. If I’m swimming in the sea I don’t like to go too far where it’s deeper or where there is ‘dark’ water because I do wonder what’s lurking down below and have a fear that something will grab my leg and pull me under! Not necessarily a shark but something not very friendly! My husband and I got married in the Dominican Republic and while we were there we went on an excursion. This included a stop-off at a river – can’t remember the name! We all piled out and had a swim in this river and very beautiful it was too, except the thing that was putting me off being in the river, was the fact that it was where the film ‘Anaconda’ was filmed! I haven’t seen this film but I don’t think it ever won any awards! The thing was it actually looked liked an ideal setting to come across one of these mahoosive snakes and that idea alone wasn’t sitting well with me while we were all splashing about in the river! Needless to say I was more than a little relieved when we moved on to our next stop! Not a snake in sight!….
I love your fab flamingo card Gill! Putting the flamingo in the frame was a great idea and the colours are gorgeous!

    1. Thank you. You were very brave, I think. There would be zero chance of getting me into that river. I think I have seen at least some of the film, and really it only helped reinforce the Jaws Legacy for me!

  6. I have a friend similarly scarred by watching Jaws at too young an age; she won’t even go to the beach and really hates bridges, whether they’re over fresh water or salt water, and pools. Not a swimmer, that one. Pretty card! Flamingos are pretty stately and goofy all at once. My Mom has a stuffed animal flamingo she named Laverne; the naming is more an indication of the flamingo’s character than the dottiness of my Mom. 🙂

    1. Oh, your poor friend! I am not quite that bad, thank goodness. I like your description – stately and goofy is a perfect flamingo description. I expect a flamingo named Laverne to be wearing a lorgnette, for some reason!

  7. I am the same way…I can be terrified for a long time after seeing a graphic movie. I still don’t like shower curtains after seeing Psycho!
I love your creations…the flamingo card is wonderful!

    1. Agreed! I barely close my eyes in the shower for the exact same reason! thanks for the nice words about my creative efforts!

  8. Love this card. Flamingo’s are my favorite. Is the back ground a stamp or paper?
Pretty in pink is another good movie. I saw Jaws at the drive-in..can’t say I watched much of it..lol But, I also don’t eat anything that comes out of an ocean or a river. It’s the whole dirty water thing I guess.
    Thanks for the laughter!!

    1. Hi! Nice to see you again! I love a flamingo too. They are so daft-looking, but elegant with it. The background is just made from several small stamps that came with the set and good black ink. Thanks for the kind words!

  9. My father was a commercial fisherman. I’m sometimes more at ease at sea than on land. Funny thing, though, after we saw Jaws I developed a fear of swimming pools that lasted a few years.
Flamingos, on the other hand, are a family favorite!

  10. Sharks are serenely beautiful. There is a local aquarium that houses some very large sharks. I can sit there for hours and watch them swim. They are just so well built to survive. Oddly, they calm me.

Flamingos, on the other hand, scare me. Perhaps it is because pink never has appealed to me. Or maybe it’s that they are as tall as I am, can fly, and have those big beaks. Yes, beaks are far scarier than teeth.

    1. Interesting, but I think you might be in a bit of a minority about beaks vs teeth! I did go to the London Aquarium once, for one of those corporate parties when it is closed to the public. I struggled with making polite small talk to businessmen who had a shark swimming around behind their shoulder! I kept on wanting to shout “look out!”

  11. Oh what a great card! I love that flamingo! Jaws brings back such memories for me, too, however mine are somewhat different that yours. LOL! I worked at a theatre that was showing that movie and had to listen to that music MANY times over and over. Two shows a night, 5 nights a week. I did see the movie, and my husband, who was the manager of the theatre loves that movie and watches it anytime it comes on! We (re)met at the movie theatre…we had gone to grade school and high school together but didn’t date until after we had graduated from high school. I worked full time and took the part time job at the theatre for some extra money…ended up with a husband! LOL!

  12. OMG, I really do think we were separated at birth! I, too, saw Jaws for the first time when I was 12, at the theatre, with my big sister. No idea how I got in (maybe it was before the rating system came into effect), but I remember, after the head-popping-out-of-the-hole scene, I spent much of the rest of the film hiding my own face in my hands. For months after that, thanks to the Jaws Legacy (great name, by the way), I bathed a little less often than perhaps those around me preferred because I had an irrational fear that a Great White Shark (all 35 feet of it) was going to come up through the shower drain to get me! It was only recently that I was able to watch the thing all the way through. Anyhoo,,, cute card!

    1. Hurrah!! I love a bit of solidarity! I totally understand how you thought a shark might appear through the plumbing. I mean, it boarded a boat in the movie (without a ticket), and was apparently fine flailing around on a dry kitchen floor in Surrey, so why not?! Honestly, we are a scarred generation…..!

  13. This card looks balanced and beautiful! You colored everything nicely!
    I assume I’m lucky as I haven’t seen this film! ) And I don’t want to. Otherwise I would’ve been like you.
I love flamingos. We’ve just seen the Earthflight series about birds and flamingos are so beautiful in their dance. There are some unpleasant and sad episodes with other animals preying on birds (including flamingos), but this series is really great.

      1. I’m really happy, that you’ve tried coloring and it gets better with every coloring project you do!

This is the best series about birds, that I’ve ever seen. They are using the latest technology to capture great moments, that we’ve never seen before.

  14. Although I allowed myself a wry smile about the shark ‘thing’ …. I know EXACTLY what you mean because I too have that same thing going on. I’m scared witless to go out on a boat because a giant shark might be waiting out there, just for me to be talked into going against my better judgement.

I KNOW that there is a shark with my name written on one of its teeth, and that said shark will sniff and sniff and KAPOW! It will know with that inner knowledge that I know sharks have, that I’m on that boat, up above, floating on the water. In fact, the shark will look up and be watching and waiting for me to take all my courage and look over the side of the boat, and then the shark will ZOOM to the surface and bite the side off the boat so that I fall into the water, where I’ll become a plaything for Mr.Shark.

Eventually … many weeks later, my foot, complete with decking pump, will be washed up on some fabulous paradise island somewhere, and it will be my only chance of ‘visiting’ somewhere fantabulous. While all the time, I would be hopping about Heaven, using an upturned broom as a crutch and crying for my missing foot.

See? I know your pain. I too am haunted by that darn film.

Oh … loved the card by the way. lol.

    1. See? See? Mr Spielberg has SO much to answer for! We are a damaged generation! At the very least he owes us a deck chair each, from which to watch the carnage safely. Maybe we should hold out for a beach hut though…

      1. A BEACH HUT!!! Ohhh be still my beating heart. I sooooo want a Beach Hut. I can imagine myself sitting in or just outside the doors of my very own beach hut, watching everyone walk by. I’d have bunting, and beautiful cushions with a sea theme to them. I’d have something to make tea and coffee on, and we’d take a packed lunch to eat inside the hut so that the seagulls didn’t bomb us and try to steal our sandwiches.

Mr. Cobs and I have been discussing the possibility of having a beach hut. I haven’t quite twisted his arm … yet. But I’m ever hopeful. lol

  15. Glad I’m not the only one! I feel the same and reinforced it by watching a late night horror show with a short called the Raft. Stephen King keeps me from lake swimming and Jaws keeps me outta the ocean!! Beautiful cards! Loving the clean crisp lines!!

I think Jaws got to all if us, i think of it when I’m swimming in the sea (surprisingly not when i’m diving) and my kids won’t venture out further than neck high! Your gorgeous flamingo is right to stay on dry land!
